I'm in charge of a system of fleets/clans/leagues/whatever that operates over a variety of games, we were thniking about putting all the forums together and We wanted a powerful software, since I had prior experience with this, We put this as one of our smaller branches forums. Everyone likes this and we plane to move the other 5-6 boards here. Problem is, We have people from many games, if we were to count our members in total we would probably have well over 1000. I need something that makes it we can add fields to the profile such as "Game(s)" etc. The other choice is to put each game in a seperate group and the problem with that is theres more than 1 case where a person plays 2 or more games. I wouldnt think this would be hard to add :)

Custom profile fields you say?

1000 members you say?

Sounds like my priorities just got reordered.

custom profile fields shouldn't be too hard to do anyway, unless Sean's got some crazy plan for them

Also we are very "shout-Heavy". We go though the 10 pages of history every 24 hours, is it possible to make the shout be stored in a topic (this was possible on another host via third party codes) this isn't major but more permanent logs would be nice :)

While it's not really a bad idea to have the Shoutbox be linked to a thread, if it gets the activity you describe it would be pretty difficult to navigate through. Even expanding the number of pages linked to wouldn't really help either (you can go past page 10 by editing the URL- afaik the logs are permanent and shouts don't get auto-pruned). I think you'd be better off than a thread if the history page was redone so you could sort messages by date and other things.

but regardless, a Shoutbox is really for short, quick, insignificant messages. Anything that would need to be logged should be encouraged to go in a thread, that way it can be better organized, easier to search through, etc.

Exactly what Kesha said. I'm pretty sure shouts are kept forever, because I've gone beyond 10 pages myself. If you're getting that many shouts, I'd probably encourage my members to make more regular posts.
Course clear! You got a card.

Well, its basically turned into about 5 of us every night on some mobile device talking for a few hours. during the day important info relating to the clan and game is posted. havign a topic would also be good cause it could be found in the search system :)

A topic isn't really built for a high level of shoutbox-style activity. Shoutbox messages are short and simple, and the large space allocated for forum posts just isn't suited for being an archive of shoutbox shouts. There's ten times as many shouts per shoutbox page as there are post per thread page- if you go through the ten shoutbox pages daily that's one hundred new pages in a thread daily you'd have to sort through!

What you'd really need to happen is have the Shoutbox archive re-worked and integrated into search as well.

Even with that though, I'd still recommend encouraging people to put stuff they want to keep in threads themselves though, as sorting through any archive that huge is just a mess.
